Shardiya Navratri is here again — a sacred time when devotees across India worship the nine forms of Maa Durga over nine auspicious days. Day 1 is very special: it marks the beginning of this festival, with the worship of Maa Shailputri, the first of the Navadurga. Here’s everything you need to know for Day 1 of Navratri 2025.
๐️ Date
-
Navratri 2025 Day 1 begins on Monday, 22 September 2025.
⏳ Ghatasthapana / Kalash Sthapana Muhurat (Auspicious Timing)
To start the festival properly, it is essential to perform Ghatasthapana (also known as Kalash Sthapana) during a shubh muhurat. Here are the timings:
-
Pratipada Tithi begins: 1:23 AM, 22 Sept – ends 2:55 AM, 23 Sept.
-
Morning Ghatasthapana Muhurat: 6:09 AM to 8:06 AM on 22 September.
-
Abhijit Muhurat (midday auspicious period): 11:49 AM to 12:38 PM
Devotees are encouraged to perform the Ghatasthapana in the morning muhurat if possible when the Pratipada tithi is in effect; if not, the Abhijit Muhurat is considered acceptable.
๐ Who is Maa Shailputri
-
The name Shailputri comes from Sanskrit: “Shail” = mountain, “Putri” = daughter — hence she is “Daughter of the Mountains.” She is also known as Parvati, Himavati, or the reincarnation of Goddess Sati.
-
Iconography: Maa Shailputri is depicted riding a bull (Nandi), holding a trident (Trishul) in one hand and a lotus in the other. A crescent moon adorns her forehead.
-
Governing Planet: Moon. Her worship helps reduce malefic effects of the Moon and brings peace, calm, stability
